“Yoga Nidra is a meditation technique that harnesses the biological process of sleep for a spiritual purpose. Yoga Nidra follows the brainwaves down towards sleep where thoughts naturally distance themselves. Here we can easily enter the gap between us and our thoughts and re-establish the experiential knowing that we are more than what the mind thinks.”
– Kamini Desai, PhD
Education Director, Amrit Yoga Institute
The “gap” Kamini refers to is the narrow space between thoughts. The “gap” naturally occurs when you are falling asleep, but not quite asleep. You are conscious, but not quite conscious. The space between the two is the field of infinite potential, where Yoga Nidra leads us, for deep healing and creativity.

Yoga Nidra helps heal habits to addictions of all kinds – There is a spectrum to addiction:
1). a tendency/behavior (it’s NICE TO have it…); preference shown for the what makes me feel good
2). a habit (WANT TO have it…); repeatedly and automatically choosing that which I know will give me comfort or relief
3). a compulsion (driving the behavior – NEED TO have it); we are willing to go out of our way to get it
4). an addiction (obsession – no choice – HAVE TO have it); the object is perceived as an absolute need for survival
People with low dopamine appear to be more prone to addiction.
During Yoga Nidra there is up to 65% increase in endogenous dopamine release!
Studies show having enough dopamine in our bodies decreases impulsivity. Yoga Nidra’s biggest application in addiction is in the prevention of relapse. Yoga Nidra helps prevent stressors and helps the body, mind and body chemistry better cope with stress. It also helps with increasing the quality of sleep, which is important in preventing relapse.

Yoga Nidra helps depression, anxiety and sleep issues –
Studies show that Yoga Nidra releases serotonin, which helps to rebuild the hippocampus, associated with mood, learning and memory. Studies show Yoga Nidra releases Gaba, Melatonin and Serotonin which helps anxiety, depression and sleep. Studies show Yoga Nidra helps re-set the circadian rhythm which regulates the sleep cycle through the release of melatonin.
Yoga Nidra helps clear blocks – When the channels of energy are blocked, it is impossible to transmute energy into the higher levels of expression and integration. Yoga Nidra clears the pathway and allows a greater flow of energy: so does acupuncture, yoga physical postures (asanas) and other techniques that work on blocks in the physical body and meridians. However, Yoga Nidra has the power to work on subtle blocks that are held deeper than the physical body, and are lodged in the
mental and emotional bodies.

Yoga Nidra is beneficial to people who have a history of trauma exposure –

47.7% to 50% showed improvement in PTSD symptoms. Yoga Nidra reduced rage, anxiety and emotional reactivity while increased feelings of peace, self-awareness and relaxation. In addition Yoga Nidra resulted in better sleep.

The purpose of Yoga Nidra is to awaken you to the reality that: You are more than what happened to you. There’s a place where we can rest that’s even greater than what happened.

Yoga Nidra helps restore mood and memory – research shows mindful relaxation techniques are associated with an increase in the size of the hippocampus in as little as 8 weeks. Thoughts develop a new “normal”, with increased resiliency, positivity, awareness. Studies show a thickening in the pre-frontal cortex and returning the amygdala to a resting state vs. a hyper-reactive state.
Yoga Nidra helps with pre-diabetes and metabolic syndrome – by reducing stress and cortisol (the stress hormone) in the body.
